The screen stays on
Hours of a lit, often frozen panel: OLED burn-in, extra heat, wasted backlight, and a laptop glowing on an empty desk.
macOS menu bar
When you leave, the panel goes dark. The Mac stays awake for downloads, a Mac mini-style server, remote sessions, or just a darker, lower-power desk — without fighting you at the keyboard.
v0.3.4 · macOS 12+ · MIT · unsigned build: right-click Open, or remove the quarantine flag once.
Caffeine, Amphetamine, and mouse jigglers are built for “awake forever”: never sleep, never lock, never turn the display off. Overnight work survives — and so does a bright, often static screen.
Hours of a lit, often frozen panel: OLED burn-in, extra heat, wasted backlight, and a laptop glowing on an empty desk.
Some tools jiggle the mouse or hold “keep screen on”. Allowing display sleep is a hidden checkbox. Never Sleep does not simulate a mouse or keyboard.
Real display sleep, Mac still working. If remote input wakes the panel, it goes dark again. Energy Saver is never rewritten.
When you leave, the display must go dark. The machine must stay awake.
Same mechanism, several jobs. Display off, Mac awake — not only ChatGPT.
Leave a large transfer, App Store update, or Time Machine running overnight. The panel goes dark; the download does not.
SSH, file sharing, a local site, or a home lab — closer to a Mac mini. Lid open + display asleep is the reliable path; closed-lid stay-awake is best effort.
Real display sleep, not brightness 0. Less heat and wear on the panel, and the desk stays dark.
The backlight is a large part of a MacBook’s idle draw. Sleep the panel; keep CPU, disk, and network available.
Keep ChatGPT, Codex, Cursor, Screen Sharing, and SSH connected while the display truly sleeps. Use the phone board to check the live status of multiple Macs and remotely start or end Screen-Off Standby. If remote input wakes the panel, it sleeps again once you are away; if someone is at the keyboard, Never Sleep will not force it off.
Overnight 3D renders, video exports, compiles, encodes, backups, and syncs — the same work people buy keep-awake tools for, without a lit panel for hours. Duration presets and a battery floor stop it safely.
The menu-bar panel, the CLI, and this page all describe the same contract.
Start Screen-Off Standby from the sun. The display sleeps after about 1.5 seconds; the system keeps running.
HID idle plus lid state decide “user present”. While you type, it will not force-sleep the panel.
If remote or synthetic input lights the screen, Never Sleep reasserts display sleep while you are away.
Global hotkey ⌥⌘P works with the display off, or click the moon in the menu.
Only in-process IOKit assertions. Quit, crash, or relaunch restores clamshell flags. No leftover power policy.
never-sleep status --json stays English and stable. Codex can run never-sleep on --for 8h.
Display off · Mac online. Downloads, a mini server, remote clients, and long jobs keep running.
Get started
Click “Start Screen-Off Standby”. The display sleeps after about 1.5 seconds.
It will not fight you for the screen while you type; it sleeps again after you leave.
Press ⌥⌘P or choose “End Standby” in the menu.
Keep in mind
Closed-lid stay-awake is best-effort, more reliable on power. Lid open + display asleep is the reliable path.
Standby ends automatically on low battery so the pack is not drained.
Quitting restores normal sleep. Energy Saver settings are never rewritten.
While the menu bar is running, the CLI uses a Unix socket. Over SSH with no menu bar, never-sleep on occupies the foreground like caffeinate.
# keep the Mac awake, display off, for eight hours never-sleep on --for 8h never-sleep status --json never-sleep off never-sleep doctor # assertions, battery, lid
Keep-awake forever tools keep the lights on. Display-off by default is the product, not a buried option.

Short answers matching the product contract.
It puts the MacBook display to sleep while keeping the machine awake. Use it for unattended downloads, a Mac mini-style server, remote clients, screen protection, and lower idle power.
No. Remote agents are one job. People also use it for unattended downloads, leaving a MacBook running like a Mac mini, protecting the panel, and cutting idle power.
No. The default path is real display sleep, then it reasserts sleep if a remote agent wakes the panel while you are away.
Closed-lid stay-awake is best effort. Lid open plus display asleep is the reliable path.
No. It only takes in-process IOKit assertions. Quit, crash, or relaunch restores clamshell flags. Energy Saver is never rewritten.
Keep-awake tools keep the machine from sleeping. Many also keep the display on; PowerToys Awake only does that when Keep screen on is checked. Never Sleep keeps the Mac awake and puts the display to sleep. It does not simulate a mouse or keyboard, it reasserts display sleep if a remote session wakes the panel, and it never rewrites Energy Saver.
No. It does not simulate a mouse or keyboard. Presence spoofing is not a feature. HID idle still means a person is away.
The default path is real display sleep, not a static bright frame. Overnight work does not leave the panel on for hours.
Press ⌥⌘P, click End Standby in the menu bar, or run never-sleep off.
